Reclaiming Balance in the Turkana Basin
CRUCIAL is launching an Environmental Justice & Resilience Program targeting the Turkana Basin, a fragile ecosystem grappling with climate shocks, hydrological alteration, and human vulnerability. Our goal is to develop community-centered, research-informed solutions to environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and inter-communal conflict in the region.
Key Focus Areas:
1. Hydrological Advocacy & Research
• Impact assessments of upstream dam projects (e.g., Gibe III)
• Policy dialogue with regional actors on transboundary water justice
• Youth and community education on hydrological dynamics
2. Climate Resilience Programs
• Training in drought-resilient farming and pastoralism
• Promotion of indigenous tree planting and carbon sinks
• Early warning systems and climate-smart land management
3. Environmental Education & Storytelling
• Local language storytelling on biodiversity, lake ecology, and conservation
• School and community environmental clubs
• Public art, media, and documentary initiatives
4. Fisheries & Aquatic Ecosystem Protection
• Community monitoring of fish stocks
• Sustainable fishing training and gear alternatives
• Creation of fish breeding sanctuaries in degraded zones
